Since 2014 Elegiac has published a lot of
music. Zane Young from San Diego, California, the only member of this vicious
black metal band has done it again and is now out with his 5th full-length
album. With an album of one hour and two minutes, it is a bit longer than most
black metal albums I usually listen to, but for Elegiac it is the third album
of this length. It did not prevent me to get through the new release though, and
I listened to it several times without hesitation.
This is a classic Elegiac album, consisting of eight tracks with absolute full blast. The first song Rituals of War starts out monotonously as very raw black metal, with a guitar in the same riff through the song, drums included, and a murky vocal appearing in the background. Two minutes into the song it is almost like someone counted for a storm to break loose as all the instruments and the dour vocal collide.
Allegiance and Honor is track two and also the shortest number of the album that opens fully chaotic with a harsh vocal crying his pain… ,,To the heathen kings who walked before him, he owe his allegiance and honor them with his life”. Halfway the song shifts and expresses a different sound until the very end. Followed by the most quiet, but longest number of the album, Somber Morning has a chaotic ending. Through Ancient Eyes goes in the same pattern as the previous song, even the same pace and with quiet, harsh vocals.
With a headbanging riff Purity of Winter is addictive and repetitive. This track is probably where the vocal stands out the most. The song has a fading outro, and is very thought through. Golden Fires of Victory has a quiet start, but a minute into the song it breaks loose with distorted guitars and blistering drums! With a slightly “happy” tune to it, the track Pagan Storm is different than the rest of the album to begin with. Then the flow changes and becomes an incredibly classic black metal number. Everything works together and make it all complete! What a track! The last song Ancient Spirit, is a good song to end the album with! Synchronous guitar and drums goes hand in hand with each other along with dark morbid vocals. What else needs to be told?
