HateSphere who just released their tenth full length album last Friday invited the audience for a listening session of their newest album before they went onstage and opened a can of worms! They did their best to entertain the crowd in a more than half empty hall, a class example of a Sunday concert where people would rather stay at home. HateSphere played a solid show with both new songs and old hits and it was clear, that many in the audience attended the night mainly for the local boys in HateSphere, as many left after the performance. Personally I don't get HateSphere, to me it seems like just another band that does generic thrashy and energetic metal songs, where the breaks in between are filled with lame jokes about bacon, beer and tits and stuff that doesn't make any sense (an example: their newest release is by some, viewed as their 'black album' but to them it was the 'mustard album'?), what the hell is that all about? Nevertheless, the audience seemed to enjoy the show, and I must admit that the new album is far better than the other tracks I have heard from previous records, especially live.
HateSphere receives 3/6
After a 20-minute break, Sinsaenum came onstage to an even emptier hall (we're sorry, Danes are super lazy) and tried their best to lift the spirits of the rest of the crowd. Sinsaenum blasted the venue with their 90's death metal sound and it worked out quite okay, but after a few songs the ball sadly kind of stopped rolling and after that it didn't really feel like the concert was going anywhere. Joey Jordison hammered the drums like he used to do and it was quite a treat to see him on the drums again after his illness. Welcome back! The band thanked the audience for coming out on a Sunday night and asked if there were any Melvins fans as they introduced a cover song for the night, before ending the night by playing their 'hit' Army of Chaos.
Sinsaenum receives 4/6
In the end it turned out to be a night where I can sadly relate to those who stayed home. It could definitely have been a better show, and I don't know if it is the lack of audience is to blame, or the bands themselves. It sure isn't an easy task to keep up having lifted spirits while performing to an empty hall. Kudos to the bands for keeping it up!
