Last day at Aalborg metal festival and there were so many strong names for this third day. Best concert experience was clearly between Necrophobic and Saturnus, with what the audience showed they agreed with us. It was an absolutely indescribable and chilling experience Saturnus delivered to us this afternoon, with their 25th anniversary and first show this year.
PORTRAIT (SE) / 14:50
BULLET (SE) / 15:40
BERSÆRK (DK) / 16:40
Our last visit with Bersærk was at Forbrændingen in Albertslund last month where they delivered some of the best they could offer. At this year's Aalborg Metal Festival it was hard outdo that evening in Albertslund, but they were actually close to. The band had retained their energey and they gave a terrific experience. This Saturday was even frontman Casper Popp's birthday, and it was clear that he had a great day, and the crowd was overwhelmed with how intense and great this show was. As always, they deliver their best to their fans - which counts a lot of supporters, who clearly had a party this very evening.
SATURNUS (DK) / 17:50
Saturnus was back at Aalborg Metal Festival after six years and played what would be their only show for 2018. It was somewhat sad when they announced that it was actually their 25th anniversary this year, as they, in our opinion, should have been touring the world and celebrate their 25 years of existence with all of their fans instead.
When the intro hit the speakers, we already had goosebumps, and that rarely happens. First song was Litany of Rain, and Rune Stiassny played the guitar beautifully as always. Saturnus delivered a solid and well-performed show as they always do, they never disappoint, and the setlist was predictable and came as no big surprise. Nothing new under the sun here (or Saturn, or what you will), but that is certainly not a bad thing in their case. The show lasted for 55 minutes, but preferably they play for two hours (even though two hours can be tough when listening to doom metal if you are not experienced in the genre). They finished beautifully with their classic Christ Goodbye as they usually do. A very solid concert was delivered from Danish Saturnus and can be concluded as one of the best of the festival this year as well.
NECROPHOBIC (SE) / 19:15
The best concert of the day, without a doubt!
The Swedish death/black metal band Necrophobic brought a dark feeling over Aalborg. The Mark of the Necrogram was their opening track and a fabulous way to start 40 minutes of pure evil. Although some of people the audience did not know about them, they still gave all they had in 'em and sang along on some of their big hits like Tsar Bomba and Darkside (which are easy to sing along to anyway). The fans got an experience they will not so easily forget since everyone seemed more than caught about what was going on on stage. The Swedes delivered 40 minutes of Satan, Satan, and more Satan! Since their original bassist Alex Friberg is on tour with Naglfar at the moment they had brought in Tobias Christiansson from Grave as a temporary replacement which worked fantastically since he knows the other band members well, and he was just right for this devilish night. This diabolical evening was well set with the lightning, all the corpsepaint and pentagrams. Saturday night was definitely exceptional because of this show.
ELDER (US) / 20:30
A fresh contribution for today's program, which was a real pleasure for the audience with some stoner rock, doom and jazz. The musicians were skilled, but the music did not catch us a lot. Personally, we think the genre was too far from the other names of the program that you ended up somewhat confused with what was going on. Many people stayed throughout the concert though, because it was something completely different, so perhaps they were better greeted by some people than others. There was a bit of trouble with the sound along the way but after that people acted like nothing had happened and the bassist kept jumping and dancing on stage. These young guys are on tour with their latest record Reflections of a Floating World released last summer. Not a remarkable show for us, especially after the previous hard-hitting concert by Necrophobic.
ROSS THE BOSS (US) / 22:00
Ross and the rest of the guys hit the stage at 22 sharp, with the speakers blasting as they headed onwards with their barrage of old Manowar classics. They started out with a fan favourite Blood of the Kings followed by Death Tone. It was clear that the real fans gathered on the right side of the stage, in front of Ross himself, while the left side kind of fell short. They energy was there, and the fans were ready to sing along and that they did. 11 classics apart from one new song, Fistful of Hate, and man did people sing along on songs like Kill With Power, Battle Hymn and the all-time favourite Hail and Kill! Although Marc Lopes clearly is not Eric Adams of Manowar, he sure can do a great tribute to the old songs, and most notably his screams are quite on point with the original, whereas the rest of the singing lacked the skill that Eric possesses. But how do you compete with one of the greatest heavy metal singers of all time, anyway? As much as Lopes felt satisfied and comfortable on the stage, Ross, though, seemed like he was having a bad day and did not even want to be there. Of course, he is an ageing gentleman who is in his 65th year of life, and the band was drawing to a close of a long tour, but he looked tired and exhausted. Other Manowar classics presented this evening were Sign of the Hammer, Fighting The World and Thor (The Powerhead). So. Should you go see this band if you have the chance? Yes! For all it was worth it was a great evening with only a few hiccups.

This show was simply the best way to end the last Danish metal festival of the year!
Every empty space on the floor was filled out by the audience, and the band was in their very best shape. Lead singer Rafał Piotrowski was impressed by the attendance this midnight and he seized the occasion to film the audience with his mobile phone. As the concert progressed, a person in the crowd suddenly got an injury in his head, but fortunately it was not a bloody sight and he was helped on the spot. At one point, some people threw their beers to the stage, which prevented Vogg Kieltykas's pedalboard from working, but it quickly fixed and forgotten, and the band turned the whole place upside down. It was some seriously fast and extreme concert where Decapitated kept the pace of full blows. They delivered as always!

Portrait was the first band for us to see this Saturday and the first to deliver some cool heavy metal noise. These guys appeared quite young considering that their music has a classic 80’s sound. One could think that they had ended up in the wrong century! None the less, vocalist Per Lengstedt rocked the falsetto so much that even King Diamond would be jealous. Tonight, the band was finishing their tour with Bullet and Ross the Boss with this show as their final after a few weeks on the road.
Sadly, it was also a show that only lasted around 30 minutes, which meant that there was not too much time to play some of their older stuff, and therefore they focused more on their two newest records Crossroads and Burn the World. A real shame, as we were really hoping for some of their classics from Crimen Laesae Majestatis Divinae. Well... We did get a tiny bit of it, a 30-second snippet of Beast of Fire before they thanked the audience for coming out so early and support true metal. Here is to Portrait, for supporting metal to the fullest!BULLET (SE) / 15:40
One heavy metal band followed another: Bullet hit the stage. Another band that has ended up in the wrong period of time! The bulletboys are back and with their newest record Dust to Gold their old school tour bus was headed for Aalborg. One of our first thoughts was if Shane Embury of grindcore/death metal band Napalm Death had become the lead singer of a heavy metal/hard rock band. And rhythm guitarist Hampus Klang (who by the way is one of the organizers of the Swedish festival Muskelrock) could have been the son of Mikkey Dee as well. The resemblances were striking!
The band rocked the stage with many links to the AC/DC and Accept sound as we know it. A considerably larger audience had showed up to rock out with Dag Hofer & Co. this Saturday afternoon. With a beer or two in hand, people headbanged and shouted through their 45-minute set. The band clearly had a good time and it rebounded well off to the audience. Even with only 45 minutes the band roared on and played well over 10 songs. No more than three-minute songs of course, that is the heavy metal rule. What is funny is that we got to see this band in such an intimate setting and as a support act, when this is a band that headlines the bigger stages in our brotherland, Sweden, in front of 40.000 people with pyrotechnics and all that good jazz. The band finished the set in the best manner with their big hit Bite the Bullet. With this kind of music, you simply cannot become anything but happy!
