Severoth released his fourth full-length album “When the Night Falls…” at the end of October this year, by Werewolf Promotion, whom he has had a strong partnership with since 2009. After last year’s beautiful album, “Forestpaths” this new release would have been almost impossible to outdo. Exactly on the very hour, it came out and until this very second, I am listening to it repeatedly. My mind and my soul is absolutely imprisoned by this incredible sadness and solitude, and overwhelmed by the sounds of so many different instruments that make this album complete with every atmospheric touch of it. I have so many words in my head for describing such a wonderful piece of art, but I could never say them out loud because it is within the music itself. One of the incredible things about Severoth’s music is that it has the ability to take you far away and forget everything, just like you are in another world filled with a good atmosphere and incredible nature.

The new album of his contains eight tracks with a total variation of 1 hour and 8 minutes. If you are really into atmospheric black metal this album is definitely for you. Previously he has given us mind-blowing albums like the first album “Winterfall” from 2015, “Самітність” from 2016 and “Forestpaths” as I talked about earlier from 2017, which has many things in common as if it was a trilogy. Each time you listen feel better improvements with everything from the recordings to the experience of how much deeper the music is getting. There is soul and passion in the music, which makes a good atmospheric black metal album a thousand times better.

I have tried repeatedly to compare this album with other releases from this year, and I have to say any other releases completely drowns. “When the Night Falls…” is different in the approach, as a new beginning. Digging into this masterpiece of an album, which was written in Ukraine. Introduced by the first and longest track on the album “Winter Sang Her Lullaby”, three minutes of this calm feeling as if you were laying down in the grass at night and looking at the stars wondering about the universe. Then guitars are repeatedly going in the same notes switching between that and keyboard taps that just completes this long track. In the meanwhile, we hear these screams of a lonely voice coming from far away, full of despair and sadness. The melody is absolutely out of this world and puts your mind somewhere elsewhere. As one wanders deeper into the album, “As Pale Moon Across Mists Wandered” continues where the previous song ended. This is definitely a more up paced song that makes you listen even more to everything that is happening. Again guitars are repeating itself in a very matching way, and half way through the song synth are growing along with what sounds like painful voices of solitude. This ends with alluring acoustic guitar playing and fading into “Dark Thoughts”. I will call this song the most somber one of them all, the title of the song says it all. Depressive vocals are screaming but you cannot really hear what. Like if you were wandering through a cold misty winter night all confused looking for help to find yourself. Everything is possible to imagine within this kind of music, just close your eyes and it will find its way. “Sadness of Bright Stars” is an instrumental song that starts out with this beautiful guitar played string by string bursting into speechless melodies, which are very emotional.

My first time hearing this next song “Call of Carpathians” I was confused by the very first seconds. This is definitely an outstanding track, compared to everything else on the album. The first thing you hear is a short flute introduction, followed by an outbreak of guitars mixed with keyboard synths blasts out and continues the album. The vocals are again unclear to hear but it gives the whole number its mood and the atmosphere of hope and a new beginning. In the middle of the song, there is another surprise, this time a trumpet mixed with all the other instruments, giving the song an amazing unique sound that has never been heard within the genre. A magical song that lets one dream far away. “When Leaves Fall…” is yet another long song, there is not much to describe with words on this album. It is a journey that everyone has to listen to and experience by themselves. However, this song is definitely the more quiet song, and by that I mean the energy in it, is toned down and the vocals are less highlighted. This next song is the shortest one on the album. “Autumn Farewell Beauty” is as beautiful as the other acoustic song. These two acoustic songs really gives you a break from all the thinking you are put through while hearing the songs and that is really a good choice of placing them where they are on the album, it allows you to not get too exhausted and overwhelmed by so many beautiful things at once. This is definitely a farewell melody just as the title says. Final number “By The Wings of Night Birds” continues from where the previous song left off. This long instrumental track lets one say farewell or lets you let go of something old and opens up a space for something new. There is so much sadness over the keyboards that are played within this song.

If it did not already appear in my writing, I must say that this album wakes and touches everything in me. I cannot control my feelings or thoughts when I hear it, everything is so emotional and it speaks right into my soul. I think that there are things you cannot explain with words, for example, the love that I have for this album. It is so weird to me to sit here and say that I love this album as I could love another human being, but in this case, I have no doubt about how strong my feelings are for this new album. Personally, I have to say a huge thank you to Severoth for making his music, of course for himself in the first place but that it also helps other people is such a gift.
