Nyt Liv is a fairly new act in the world of danish hardcore, having only being formed in 2016, and beside having their EP "Livet Brænder" to their name until now, they have done a string of noteworthy concerts such as at Roskilde Festival, Copenhell and Aalborg Metal Festival. Today however, they have unveiled their first full-length album "Ensomhedens Kolde Kald", a 10-track journey that will prove whether or not Nyt Liv are able to deliver off-stage.
The instrumentation and how these are presented are crisp to a fault, which I assume is thanks to the talented Jacob Bredahl and Brad Boatright manning the production and mastering respectively. Their combined experience really shines through on this album, all instruments are given equal dominance and presence, and the overall soundscape feels saturated and beefy.
One thing I'd like to note is the simplistic aggression shown on the album, there are no solos, no unnessecary fills, no long hypnotic riffs, just straight to the bone delivery. While some listeners might find themselves bored wishing for some more melody, I admire the honesty and dedication to the direct... direction (!).
The bass guitar especially having a sound designed to break teeth; the intro of "Fortidens tæsk" being a good sample of this and when combined with the guitar, you'd be forgiven for the involuntary moshing it would cause.
The drumwork is pounding straight-forward, with few fills only used for effect, going from slow, almost sludge-like pacing to uptempo thrashing beats. Where this albums true force is, is the vocals. Vocalist Michael Benborg Aagesen bellows out his lyrics about human issues and personal topics with seriousness and force, and dare I say... heart?! I certainly feel a passion for the lyrics content as they are delivered to my ears though Michael's screams. I'd also like to applaud the choice of using danish as the conveyor of the lyrics, which to me at least makes it stand out in a sea of english-using bands.
While the songs themselves are short overall, with only a few breaking into the 3-minute mark, they get to the point. A song like "Ingen fast form" is a good example of this; aggressive bass joined by an equally angry guitar and drums, all in a runtime of a single minute. No nonsense, Nyt Liv gets the point across and completes the song without any jazz or fuzz, and to add anything more to this short song would diminish it.
Other songs promises great Live-value with catchy choruses and crushing headbang-inducing tempos. Opening song "Kniven" and "Aske Og Blod" in particular is in this category.
So as this review draws to a close, I can say that Nyt Liv is indeed worth your time. While not particular extraordinary, this album still delivers some solid music for fans of Fossils, Dirt Forge and other sludgy hardcore acts, and this should be something you should at least check out.
