Midgardsblot 2019 - Our recommendations!

By Metal To Go

The five-year anniversary of Midgardsblot is near and since were only a few days away from the gates to open once again, we have prepared our recommendations for you all.

With our third year as a part of what we see as one of the most engaging and soulful festivals out there, we are thrilled to be back in under a week's time. Every announcement so far from the festival's point seems to be done sincerely from the heart, which we appreciate to the fullest and with the lineup being completed there is not much to add to it for us to attend once again. We are ready to connect our selves with nature to be one with the atmosphere of Midgardsblot!

The music
Thursday - August 15th
We highly recommend attending the blot ceremony, and with the festival doors opening at 16:00, it gives everyone plenty of time before the Blot Ceremony that starts at 17:30 until 18:55.

Who: Gaahls Wyrd
Where: Valhalla
When: 18:55 - 19:45
Once again Gaahls Wyrd returns to the festivities of Midgardsblot in Norway. With them just releasing their new album "Gastir - Ghosts Invited" a couple of months ago, there will hopefully be some of the new material played. If you are into haunting and beautiful soundscapes that create atmospheric black metal you will automatically be drawn to Valhalla after the Blot Ceremony.

Who: Sindri
Where: Kaupangr
When: 19:45 - 20:15
A very interesting booking for this year is Sindri. Besides being a frontman he has created his own universe with the sound of acoustic melancholic music. His folkish tones and touching voice will take us through half an hour of his most intense and unique styled landscapes. The Norweigan lyrics seem to be taken straight from some personal experiences, and along with his voice, everything comes together perfectly.
Sindri - Alt er her (der du er)

Who: Tormentor
Where: Valhalla
When: 20:15 - 21:00
The Hungarian experimental metal band with Attila in their front was one of the early announcements for this year's Midgardsblot. Their most influential album "Anno Domini" really defined the black metal genre that he also carries with him through his time in Mayhem. If you are into some true black metal with some dark history this is definitely for you.

Who: Hugsjá / Skuggsjá
Where: Valhalla
When: 21:45 - 23:00
Ivar Bjørnson & Einar Selvik is for the first time bringing their projects Hugsjá and Skuggsjá to the Midgardsblot itself. With a show like this, where the music is so rich, atmospheric and creates an intense experience, there is no doubt that this will be as memorable as the Heilung show back in 2017. If you are craving for the universe Einar Selvik creates with Wardruna, this will quench your thirst and give you the most vivid telling.

Other activities before the gates open can be found here.
We recommend checking out Dayal Patterson's "Evolution of the Cult" where he will be talking about the increasing interest in physical books from the metal scene to capture the voices of the artists. While we are at it we also recommend attending the talk with Einar Selvik & Ivar Bjørnson where you will be filled with the history and the big picture of how "Skuggsjá" and "Hugsjá" was formed.

Friday - August 16th
The gates open at 14:00 so if you are there from the very opening we recommend attending the Metal Yoga and definitely if you never tried it before.

Who: Urarv
Where: Gildehallen
When: 14:15 - 15:00
The Norwegian Avant-garde black metal trio will be opening Friday. After releasing their debut album "Aurum" following by an EP the band has plenty of material to set the mood with their old-school black metal guitar sound and Aldrahn's dynamic voice. Their emotional and clear listening music will be one of the best starts of the day. If Dødheimsgard is in your favor this will be too.
Urarv - Aurum album

Who: Zuriaake
Where: Valhalla
When: 17:45 - 18:30
Since 2001 the epic black metal band has given us some mysterious, extreme and atmospheric releases. Creating soundscapes that are like no others making them legends. Making their way to this year's Midgardsblot on their tour is going to be one big appearance.
Zuriaake - Evil Spirit

Who: Vreid
Where: Valhalla
When: 19:10 - 20:00
A band that rose from the ashes of WindirVreid released their eighth full-length album almost a year ago and has since played some shows around Europe. Their unique melodic black metal sound with elements of 70's rock and 80's classic metal will be a blast when these legends enter the Valhalla stage.

Vreid - Black Rites in the Black Nights

Who: Eldrim
Where: Gildehallen
When: 20:00 - 20:45
Taking us back a thousand years the music of Eldrim gives us the sound of Midgardsblot. Inspired by the darker side of the Viking age through the northern folk music, stories will be told while their show at Gildehallen will be a different universe to enter.
Eldrim - Uår

Who: Deicide
Where: Valhalla
When: 22:45 - 23:45
Traveling from the States the death metal band Deicide is returning to Norway after a long time. Their success came to life after the release of the album "Legion" and is credited as the second best-selling death metal band of the SoundScan Era after Cannibal Corpse. The band has released twelve studio albums and is known for its lyrics that has been resulted in bans, lawsuits, and criticism. Let's hope they will be there in time for their performance since they did not make it to their flight for their Brutal Assault 2019 show.
Deicide - Defying the Sacred

Other activities before the gates open can be found here.
We recommend checking out Jonas Lorentzen (wolf-singer of Heilung) and Naina Eira that will take you through MATR, a journey through new nordic historic food tasting.

Saturday - August 17th
The gates open at 14:00, and the opportunity for Metal Yoga is there once again.

Who: Ereb Altor
Where: Valhalla
When: 16:15 - 17:00
Finally, the day where the Swedish Viking black metallers will open the Valhalla stage. Ereb Altor has for a long time been in our top favorite bands to perform live and we are definitely attending this year because of these guys. With them just releasing their new video for some new material and their new album that is set to be released very soon, we sure hope for some new songs like we were exposed to at Wacken Winter Nights earlier this year. If you want to be blown away by an extraordinary show with a high amount of energy this is for you. There might even come some Bathory covers up!
Ereb Altor - En Synd Svart som Sot

Who: Einherjer
Where: Valhalla
When: 19:15 - 20:00
The Norwegian Viking metal band is one of the earlier bands from the scene. With their heavy influences of Norwegian folk music, their new album "Norrøne Spor" will definitely draw a big crowd when they set feet on the stage at Midgardsblot.
Einherjer - Spre Vingene

Who: Enslaved
Where: Valhalla
When: 20:45 - 21:45
Enslaved is back at Midgardsblot for this five year anniversary. The Viking black metal band will be bringing their career-spanning material, to celebrate their honored return. They brought the Norse history into the metal world, we are in for one hell of a show when these Norwegians consume the Valhalla stage at Midgardsblot.
Enslaved - Storm Son

Who: Heilung
Where: Valhalla
When: 22:45 - 00:15
Heilung returns to Midgardsblot for the second time since 2017, a show that is written in the history books, and in our souls to never be forgotten. The intensity and healing part of their music will forever be haunting our hearts. For those who haven't experienced them before, this is your time to be embraced and emotionally touched by their unique wonders. Their new album "Futha" has just been released and we sure hope to hear some of that material for their show at Midgardsblot.

We recommend checking out Michal Choinski "The Grotesque and the Disturbed - the Aesthetics of Metal Album Cover" where he will be trying to reach a better understanding of how the reception of music itself can be reinforced by the disturbance of visual balance.
