Horned Almighty + Genfærd + Wulfaz // 25.10.2019 / Gimle (LIVE REVIEW)

By X.K

Wulfaz
To kick-off, the Darkness Over Denmark Tour Wulfaz was first up for the evening with their Viking and pagan themed black metal sound that I would describe as drawn inspiration from Bathory combined with a simpler and cleaner version of Darkthrone. The duo consists of a guitarist and a drummer where each switched on the vocals and combined with their opening samples in between it distracted the sound from sounding flat or stale throughout their entire set. Although they had short playing time, the talking in between became too much as it drew my attention away from their performance. The show itself was quite raw where the sound was thin and fragile, it gave the atmosphere a huge discrepancy in the balance sheet and so it was difficult to keep the focus. The energy they had on stage was fresh or rather massive and that is something that cannot be taken away from them.

The audience was already showing up from the very beginning, well and proved that they were here to support the Danish black metal scene. Midgardsblot these guys would fit just right, consider that!

Genfærd

What an opening, there is no other way to describe Genfærd but as the best performers this dark night at Gimle. From the moment they entered the stage and to the very last breathing second the atmosphere changed completely.

Combined with the sound both old and new material was filled with this massive strength and richness that gathered the audience to headbang. Each character, especially the two guitarists were electrical, their barbed wired microphone stands were almost glowing from burning while they played like it was their last day alive and the news of their bassist leaving was not to see. One of the things attracting about Genfærd is that there is no talking, their energy and music itself are enough to keep the audience warm, and when you, as a band, can just come in and play your music and step off stage again like that, you got my attention. Opening with Stormen from their self-titled debut album they also presented 3 new songs for us which worked entirely, particularly when Matias from Saxtorph entered the stage as guest vocals on Englemagersken which gave the song a whole extended dynamic, he showed the crowd how it should be done, but where was his paint.

Genfærd gets 5/6

Horned Almighty
Horned Almighty is a band that just by watching them live you can tell they have been playing together for a long time and on stage they work insanely powerful together. With their props, you get into their universe which is hugely captivating for even the non-extreme metallers. As promised, they had new material that was solid and seemed tight with the rest of their setlist of older tracks but as seen earlier the night we were again greeted with too much talking and the "Skål" phrase was not to count on two hands which did not fit their live appearance or the way they would be viewed. The vocals were haunting, filled with vicious heavy features that worked with the background. In particular, they have something attractive in their performance that shows that this is why their name is heard of in the Danish black metal scene.

The energy was not spared a bit and the connection with the audience lasted throughout, a lot of acquaintances showed up to support.

Horned Almighty gets 4/6
