Armnatt - Dense Fog
Six years ago, this Portuguese trio called Armnatt delivered "Darkness Times", an album that brought my attention even further to the more extreme metal music within southern Europe, to mention that the gap between great or listenable black metal is huge here. Stepping back from "Darkness Times" right into "Dense Fog", it is inspirational to follow and track their growth.
Even though this album includes ten tracks, this record fools the eye with its well-written titles that could make you think we are in for an hour of material when we really only get 26 minutes. Speaking about growth, I am utterly satisfied with the outcome of this second album, not much has changed, but hearing it also gives us a listen into the evolution of black metal and how they have kept their pure original sound that constructed Armnatt in the first place.
Ten tracks are much to go through on such fast pace and with the literally flaming intro, they understand how to warm us up before the album title song 'Dense Fog' matches on with its plain but delicate black metal style. Drums are tight, including lifeless noises at times with a vocal that wraps it all in a kind of desolated and grim atmosphere. The rest of the record maintains the same very square sound but it works smoothly. Would I have liked something else for this release? Yes! But if the contrast between this album and prior had been significant larger, in contrast, my answer would have been no.
