YOB - Wiegedood / Lille Vega 17.10.18
By Xenia Kromann
In January the Oregon trio YOB announced their
European/UK tour with the Belgian black metal band Wiegedood. Earlier this year
YOB came out with their new full-length album ‘’Our Raw Heart’’ and as for
Wiegedood who released their third full-length album ‘’De Doden Hebben Het Goed
III”, which is also the final one of their trilogy. As they started their tour
a couple of days ago, now it was time for a show on Danish soil where they did
one hell of a performance and gave us a night to remember. We are definitely in
the gig season right now!
This Wednesday evening the trio Wiegedood presented us
with a 45-minute show of their most brutal and darkest energy. As they went on
stage there was no introduction, so if you have not seen them before, you must
know they play their shows without any direct audience contact. The whole set
was staged with red light and for the opening track they played ‘Svanesang’ which is definitely a fan-favourite. The performance was very
typical Wiegedood and by that, I mean they really seem to have their stuff
fully figured out because they do an incredible show every goddamn time. The
guitarist Gilles is probably the most appealing one on stage with his
occasionally hair shaking. They managed to get the audience focused even though,
as I said, there is no contact between the crowd and the band. For their
closing song, they played ‘Prowl’
from the new album that came out in April this year. The distorted and tortured
vocals gave a true feeling of total anger and chaos.

After a shot break, which gave the audience a chance to
get some fresh air, another beer or merchandise, the curtains were drawn and
YOB was opening for what now was a crowded audience of devoted fans. Guitarist
and vocalist Mike’s remarkable way of standing in a more intimate session kind
of way by looking straight at the bassist and the drummer gave the whole
experience a great atmosphere. Lille Vega was in such great spirit, surrounded
by a truly exceptional sound and ambience.
Opening with ‘Ablaze’, YOB was in their true moment, doing what they do best. A lot of synchronized headbanging was going on; there was a whole lot of hair this evening, especially during ‘The Screen’. The sound of every song was massive and you could feel that every riff was powerful, every drum kick was passionate and every bass stroke was going through the entire audience. As for contact with the audience, they thanked us a lot for being there and supporting them, even until the very end when the vocalist Mike sat on stage after the concert was finished and gave everyone a chance to come talk.
