Swallow The Sun + October Tide + Oceanwake // 31.10.2019 / Spillestedet Stengade, Copenhagen (LIVE REVIEW)

By Metal To Go

Oceanwake
Halloween day was exceptional this year, and in the company of some of the best doom bands out there Oceanwake managed to give the almost full crowd complete satisfaction with their absolute ability to create something that feels much more than just music on this first stop on this second parted tour, in Copenhagen.

The sold-out evening was opened with a massive soundscape that introduced us through their very intense and atmospheric universe that turned out to be in our best favor since every prospect fitted our ears to perfection. There was not much interaction on both sides of the stage however we were all taken with open mouths and heavy breaths during their five songs-set that included the last one, which was sixteen minutes long.
Oceanwake get 5/6

October Tide
Swedish melodic doom metallers were gathered with one warm welcome when they stepped on stage Halloween evening to present a set that had a mostly focus on songs from their new album 'In Splendor Below'.

And with a warm welcome that turned into a full crowd with absolute love for this band and their every melodic influences and sound that appeared very Swedish in its texture they also managed to bring out some older material as 'Grey Dawn' and '12 Days of Rain' to keep up their very energetic balance. But for us, the melodic aspects took over and became almost choke-ish which combined with the many genre changes within their live sound made it unappealing and not fitting for this package.
October Tide get 2/6

Swallow The Sun
No rest for the crowd that already had positioned themselves in front of the stage waiting for what we all have been lingering for as it was our first experience with the Finns live on Danish grounds.

Opening with the title track from the latest record they managed to set the mood that already was quite dark and energetic in spirit. Tonight's focus setlist wise was to present us with new material but they could not get away from the fact that this audience wanted more, accurate 'New Moon', 'Cathedral Walls', 'Don't Fall Asleep', and more which we certainly got. The sound was not in favor this evening, especially the vocals that had an annoyingly false reflection and rollercoaster effect from time to time which, fortunately, the emotional and dark atmosphere pretty well covered how the soundscape behaved. The engaging crowd was the highlight since they hyped the whole thing.

Swallow The Sun gets 3/6
