Udånde: Life of a Purist (Album Review)

Udånde - Life of a Purist

It must have been about ten months ago when the first tracks '🜄' from the album came out, and instantly I obsessively cherished every piece of it. I don't recall such a leading bass sound guiding my consciousness towards such an atmospheric trip in a long time, which at the end along with the consistent energy that is on the entire album really gave me a breath of fresh air.

Rasmus Ejlersen, the mind behind this solo Danish black metal project, presents "Life of a Purist", a concept album as stated by himself about the narrative 'I' who's tortured by the four elements fire, water, air and earth, as he, as the representative of humanity, has not adapted to the changed in the world.

Udånde

Deepening into the roughly thirty-nine minutes of dark and cold material, not one track stood out to me as this release goes by for me as one story, not to leave any parts out of it. The continuous flow on the guitar plays a massive role which continues throughout. Although some of the songs echoes each other due to the tempo and arrangements of the riffs, it doesn't play an influential part as the vocals on each song address the lyrics to a point of almost feeling the story right at the tip of the tongue. The closing track offers some serious drum play that for the first time is heard on the album. The sincere feeling of goodbye is upon the listener as 'Epilogue', both lyrically and spirit wise, rip everything apart with a massive riff declaring the end.

These seven tracks brought me fresh energy to a world of black metal, that all too often sounds the same. I was thrilled to hear the outcome and how it positively turned out to be such a powerful and intense journey with the concept being that heavy. It goes along with every choice made to produce this album, this is really as I envisioned it, a massive hope for 2021.
