Í Myrkri: Black Fortress of Solitude + Drivende i dødens æter (Double Album Review)

Í Myrkri: Black Fortress of Solitude + Drivende i dødens æter
Label: Independent + Wolfspell Records
By: X.K

Last year the world gained a black metal project richer. í Myrkri, created by Simon Garðarsson who has done dark artwork for years decided to make his own project that evolved quickly and has now resulted in two releases where it is explicit to hear the Canadian, Quebec influences on the first album and patterns from the Finnish black metal scenery on the second. Lane Chaplin quickly became a member of the project and their alliance seems to be a huge creative bomb that has just begun, which suits my music needs to perfection.

This is a project I quickly became a big listener of as many aspects of its ways go in the directions of how I have imagined something I been missing for way too long. That pure combination of the atmospheric parts and second wave black metal sound that really can make my mind reflect.

Black Fortress of Solitude
Drawn into a heavy and dark nature the album display cold and wet landscape. I'm almost transported to a swamp fighting myself out. The deeper the rougher, just like the growth of this record. Distorted guitars go on and kindly form us some damn tight start and stop riffs that proceed to the end in a themed soundscape. Drums are letting loose and do not seem to have other purpose than layer, that at times are too high noticeable. Much is reliable on vocals and this wouldn't be the same without Lane Chaplin part taking. This is where I can hear the influences of the Quebec scene as the vocals express total hate or devastation that has an edge of atmospheric touch to its fade.

This debut needs fewer variations for my head to grab this and emotionally connect. Its mass affects me physically and torments in a completely insane way.
Am I impressed during these forty-three minutes?
I can't really get "Drivende i Dødens Æter" out of my head and wanting to go back there constantly.

I give "Black Fortress of Solitude"

Drivende i dødens æter
Taking us through a cold wind the album grabs a hold on me with these opening and finishing elements of atmosphere that I wouldn't mind having an album of by itself. "Drivende i Dødens Æter" is very epic and atmospheric in its writing, especially the guitar progressions where the drums follow but also kicks in that Finnish inspired almost raw to its sound. Seductively the vocal compliments the entire thing while maintaining its core and that makes my ears bleed of happiness. Haunting at times almost dragging me out on the edge of a cliff with pure satisfaction and emotional touch of its saturation.. memorable.

No doubt this record is to the rapid side when we combine the two but both variates throughout in their own processes. Here we have a treasure that has finally been revealed.
