The Dark Paths Festival // DAY 1 (Festival Review)

By Metal To Go

We decided to spend a couple of days in Berlin, among others to attend the festival gathering The Dark Paths at Blackland. As Scandinavians, we grow up with English as a language we speak and therefore it is always the biggest downside going to Germany especially like such events where almost no one can interact. But who needs talking when music can unite us, which certainly was proved here.

We arrived at the venue for the doors to open greeted by the organizer Kendy who welcomed us inside which was a pleasant arrival. It was our second time there both since one of us has played the setting before. We grabbed some drinks from the very old school bar that only takes cash and looked around before the movements were kicking off. The lineup consisted of almost every extreme metal sound out there so we were in for some honest serenity... yeah!

Burning Cross
The German band had just past us by on their way out holding a bowl of blood thinking they might want to decorate outside but came back in with no such color as blood. As they gradually moved on stage, it became more and more interesting for what was to happen. The light went red and five members were now in front presenting us their take on the extreme metal genre black metal. Here we had a vocalist who was quite gentle in his almost nonexisting movements at first together with a guitarist/backup vocalist that appeared deeply powerful in his attitude. The rest was not noticeable perhaps because the stage was a little small since they had big side banners on each side while a stagehand constantly stood guard on the stage and took up space. Indeed a great choice to open the festival although the entire set was very monotonous in a view of every song performed sounded much alike. As we came to an end of the set, the frontman took off his headgear and started interacting, giving a respite in their performance.

Iron Kindl Pest
Now to something completely different from what we expected to happen and it was clearly an eye-opener and the highlight of the evening when it comes to entertainment and interaction with the audience. Here in Denmark, we have a familiar band called Red Warszawa and in the same way, these Germans really got everyone up, in front, moving around. Blackland does not have the biggest crowd arrangement and as things couldn't get any more wild a moshpit could actually take place. Talking about their actual music, it could not have been any more German. Loud intro's and outro's of a German-speaking man talking combined with two vocalists who also couldn't stop talking to the crowd about meaningless things even laughing when they made a comment on themselves now playing one of their own ballads. Looking at the audience that new their songs were on fire to about forty-five minutes of sing-a-long. The style was everything from thrash, black, but mostly punk. Most memorable of them all was their drummer who was a machine of d-beats behind a wall of drums.

Wrang
Tonight we came mostly to see the Dutch extreme metallers who really took our breath away once again. These guys have caught us with an open mouth many times before, and this performance was with no exception. To begin with, the vocalist had some minor mic issues but as he kind of just managed through them, that beast of a voice was released. He has such confidence, he rested in his movements like we had not seen a frontman radiate that night. But not only that, he was immensely adept at getting the audience caught and it was also the first time this evening people stood and actually listened. Wrang plays a slightly "cleaner" type of black metal compared to the other two acts and that also made it more serious in its presentation with their strong set of songs.

Chotzä and Grafjammer also played this evening.
