Mental Coma: Ending An Era (EP Review)

Mental Coma - Ending An Era
Release date: 12/6/2020
Label: Independent
By: X.K

Mental Coma is one of the still unrecognized thrash metal bands within the Danish metal scene. Since 2013, they have offered low-fi produced thrash metal with their own touch to the more melodic angle. They released the debut album "Fragments of Democracy" back in 2016, and as for this new era, the band seems to have taken their career as a band that more serious by welcoming the new vocalist Nick Kanstrup and guitarist Lucas Dahldorph, to add some layer to the "new" and grown Mental Coma.

Production-wise I am personally more pleased listening to the incorporated death metal-vibe that has been added to their soundscape, together with the vocals, that are remarkable and exciting for this release, even though the creativity is far from advanced and many features keep repeating itself. I get thrown off by the lead guitar parts throughout that do not seem to match into the rest of the elements, but still deliver some heavy, heavy metal/power metal attitude.

Mental Coma, 2020 Lineup

'Ending An Era' is the most experimental track on the EP, also the most engaging. It still has that good thrash noise which united with prog elements are the most suitable for Nick's voice. This song I will describe as flirty, since it feels good to hear and I bet is great in action on stage. The drums communicate to the listener, while collecting the instruments to form more than previously offered thrash metal. 'Void of Despair' likewise gives a good and thrilling vibe, some Metallica vibrations to the intro, shifting towards the death metal sound on the instrumental part mixed with the thrash metal vocals.

Overall I am pleased for the band to be releasing what I consider their best release so far. This new era adapts to them and the future seems brighter at this point. I would have cherished the bass to be higher in the mix, since it is lacking almost from the beginning to the end, because the listenable parts work wonders! The same for having some deeper guitar parts. "Ending An Era" is an album that grows by each listen, so do not give up on it after one or two attempts. I would definitely be coming back to hear it again.
