Upon The Altar - Absid Ab Ordine Luminis (Album Review)

Upon The Altar - Absid Ab Ordine Luminis

This utter satanic thirty-six-minute piece is a composition which already got its barrier set high by these Polish creators, with this obscure and pitch-black debut album.

As the first second clocks, the pounding drums make themselves known, 'Crown Of Weakness' blasts directly into a 90's inspired old school death metal arrangement, especially in the vocals, that together with the bass drowns out everything else that could crack open an entire city. Moving forward each track has its highlights, both the bass-line and guitar contribute some of the most entertaining moments, which is the best trait this album has to offer. Half-way through 'Expire' the sound effects taps in, taking the album further towards the '90s possessed style. Songs like 'Expire', 'Mortuus Est Rex', and, 'Blasphemare Absens Fides' closes off with instrumental parts, which could have been very fitting. However, production-wise, it just turns the flow down to zero and comes out totally flat, making me personally skip it after several attempts.

Upon The Altar

The hype was real for me in the first couple of hearings, but I would not be able to maintain the flow over subsequent hearings. Many similar riffs serve to create frustrating letdowns, resulting in an album that could have ended properly, but doesn't. The vocals throughout remain freakish, from every "Ough" to full bloody sentences. But nothing is like the way the bass and guitar complement each other with depth on every song, and that is my reason to look forward to what they might bring us in the future.

I give this album
