Metal To Go: Under/Current (October 2021)

Welcome back to our monthly segment,
Under/Current. Here we will cover the music we currently find inspirational, the music we look forward to in the near future, and what we, J.C.L., X.K. and P.S., are currently listening to. We encourage you to check out the artists with the links provided in the texts (Marked in yellow).

Currently inspirational:

Blood Incantation - Hidden History of the Human Race

My current inspiration comes from out of space and in the shape of Blood Incantation’s Hidden History of the Human Race. This album was highly anticipated when it came out in 2019 and sure didn’t disappoint with the first single Slave Species of the Gods to the 18 min long Awakening From the Dream of Existence to the Multidimensional Nature of Our Reality. This album is full of brutal riffs and songs that every old school death metal fan will enjoy, it really takes you on a journey through space and time and the album really made them one of the best death metal bands around right now.

Infants of the Afterlife - Infants of the Afterlife

I was pleasantly surprised by the debut self-titled effort from Infants of the Afterlife, a new international project featuring members of Decoherence. The dark, twisted soundscape, glass-like guitar-tone and inspirations from death-rock and avant-garde made it an instant impression on me, and the lyrics are supposedly inspired by Cornish folklore. If anything, this is certainly original and I look forward to hearing it on repeat for some time. I know it is a good album when I think it’s too short, and I crave more, and I will await the next release of this band with anticipation.

Sol Kia - Zos Ethos

I’ve started to unpack the numerous sonic projects of Belgian mastermind CZLT who dabbles in new and experimental frontiers of jazz, drone, metal and psychedelic, most prominently with Neptunian Maximalism and Ôros Kaù. Sol Kia is another of his projects, a tour-de-force into esoteric rituals and occultism, and their new album Zos Ethos is one of the most crazy trips I’ve listened to this year. Abandon all expectations ye who enter here, this is a record which has to be experienced, as my words cannot do it justice. Listen to it in the dark for extra effect!

Currently looking forward to:

Der Weg Einer Freiheit - Noktvrn

The German masters of modern black metal have returned with their fifth full-length, Noktvrn. After both the masterful Stellar and the excellent Finisterre, I thought that they can’t possibly top those, and I have yet to be proven right. I have high hopes that Der Weg Einer Freiheit will succeed in eclipsing themselves again, or at least deliver a collection of inhumanly tight Tobias Schuler-blastbeats for me to enjoy. Listen to the singles Morgen and Monument and judge for yourself. Noktvrn releases on the 19th of November.

Exodus - Persona Non Grata

Exodus is back with a new album that lead guitarist Gary Holt says will be one of the best albums of the band's history, Persona Non Grata. The Bay area titans of thrash have been putting albums out since the 80's with the thrash metal classic album Bonded by Blood that has stood the test of time and is still one of best thrash albums ever. You can listen to the single The Years of Death and Dying here. We will see if the new album is as good as expected when it comes out on the 19th November.

Gaahl's Wyrd - The Humming Mountain

I have fond memories of the Gaahl’s Wyrd debut from 2 years ago (Which we reviewed), an overall solid start to the next chapter in the musical roller-coaster which is Gaahl. Now they are back with their next offering, a mini-album called The Humming Mountain. With two tracks currently available, my first impressions are that they are leaning more into the dark and hypnotic soundscapes which was characteristic of the debut, along with some more calmer, clean vocals, which deviates from the multiple styles utilized first. The Humming Mountain can be enjoyed in full from the 5th of November.

Negură Bunget - Zău

After the tragic and unexpected death of founding member Negru in 2017, Negură Bunget ceased to exist. However, it seems that he left behind enough material for the remaining members of this Romanian atmospheric powerhouse to piece together one last album and to honor Negru's final vision  of a "Transylvanian Trilogy" along with their two previous albums. This will be titled Zău and will see it's release on the 26th of November, finally bringing the band to a close.

This week we have listened to:

Full of Hell - Garden of Burning Apparitions

Last time around I was looking forward to Garden of Burning Apparitions. Now that it is out, I have been listening non-stop to it, and it’s everything a Full of Hell fan can expect; pulverizing sound of grindcore, death metal, noise tracks and electronics that only Full of Hell can do. I am so stoked on this album and cannot recommend this album or band enough. They are one of the best bands in extreme music right now and they have definitely proved that with this album.

गौतम बुद्ध - पुनर्जन्म भाग १ (Gautama Buddha - Purvajanam Part 1)

I have been itching to talk about this album for a few months. Mainly because I kept coming back to it, but I’ve also been held back, by being unable to describe it. Well, for starters, it’s from India, it’s Buddhist (I think) and it’s raw black metal, yet surprisingly there’s a lot more to it than just lo-fi fuzz. There is some great song-building and warm, if slightly warped melodies, which further enhance the distorted, alien vocals and overall "lost tape"-feel this album has. This is sure one unique record.

Malvm - ApexAbyssvm

Every once now and then, I just like to relax with some more old-school vibes. Malvm from Hungary recently released ApexAbyssvm, which I gave a few spins over the last weeks. I can't really describe the haunting and grim vibe this album has, it's a bit like 90's Norwegian black metal with a bit of British doom metal in the melancholic lead guitar, which makes it perfect for an autumn walk. Whatever the influences, I really think this album is doing something right, even if it isn't perfect. Some more work would have put this album up there, but that hopefully is a thing for the next album.

Temple of Scorn - Preliminary Mass

This EP just dropped unexpectedly from Temple of Scorn, a grand coalition of members from the Danish metal scene, spanning from Dawn of Demise and Baest to Horned Almighty and Sylvatica. Preliminary Mass is their debut, and showcases that there is clearly passion, ambition and the skills to pull those off. The soundscape is colossal, cavernous and brooding, leaning closer towards Dead Congregation and Immolation, differently from many of the other Danish death metal acts. A very promising start to this project.

Tumba de Carne - Decatexis // Perpetuo Altar

This one is one hell of a disgusting debut album. Decatexis // Perpetuo Altar by Argentinian five–piece, Tumba de Carne is half an hour of utterly depraved and nasty dissonant death metal, which only gets better the further you get into the album. There is a little bit of everything for all kinds of death metal aficionados, some technical stuff, some Old-school and even some more modern brutal death thrown into the mix. Just a solid album.
