Metal To Go: Under/Current (September 2020)

Welcome back to our monthly segment, Under/Current. Here we will cover the music we currently find inspirational, the music we look forward to in the near future, and what we, J.C.L, X.K..and P.S., are currently listening to. We encourage you to check out the artists with the links provided in the texts (Marked in yellow).

Authors note: Since Denmark is currently subject of the Koda/Google talks, many of our favorite artists are restricted from Danish viewers on YouTube. As such, we will be using Bandcamp-links when necessary.

Aran - Veden Varjoista

Aran surprised me very recently with it's debut full-length Veden Varjoista, which managed to hit all the right buttons for me, with it's soundscape, vibe and overall feel. This new Finnish one-man outfit is all about the long, melancholic and haunting pieces, with plenty of blasts and at times it reminds me of Wolves In The Throne Room, yet Aran is capable on standing on it's own feet and give it's own take on atmospheric black metal. The third, and instrumental, song has much more of a ambient soundtrack-feel to it, akin to the "S.T.A.L.K.E.R."-games. Overall, if you are looking to compliment your autumn with a proper soundtrack, Veden Varjoista might be for you.

Vspolokh - Pomre

Moving over the border to Russia, we have Vspolokh from the Ural Mountains. I initially saw their streamed concert over on Black Metal Promotion, and after really liking what I heard, I decided to dive into the rabbit-hole. Pomre was released a few months ago, and clicked with me as well as their concert had. It has a sound which throws me back
to some of the Cascadian black metal bands, but others seems to liken them to Drudkh. Whatever the case, Pomre is a very solid album from start to finish and well worth a listen.

Skáphe
- Skáphe³

Since their great first album, and the collaboration with Wormlust last year, I have been ready for more Skáphe, and fortunately this American/Icelandic outfit is back with their third full-length. While they have mostly been a dissonant, warped and at times a slow hypnotic affair, the single from Skáphe³ leads me to expect a faster and more varied album. Also, it would seem like the line-up has been expanded with the ridiculously fast and technical drummer Jack Blackburn, who also did the maddening and merciless drums on Guðveiki's album 2 years agoSkáphe³ is released digitally on the 30th of September, and the ever-talented Karmazid has done the artwork this time.

Dysylumn - Cosmogonie

Speaking of Karmazid, we have another one of his works on display here. Dysylumn is a French black/death group with atmospheric elements, and October 9th sees the release of their third album Cosmogonie from Signal Rex. Their previous LP Occultation from 2018 was critically acclaimed, and the single track from Cosmogonie which is currently available, certainly lives up to the artwork with a dark maelstrom of the low-end melodic sound that made their 2018 album so great. I am looking forward to another unreal experience.

Kevel - Mutatis Mutandis

Yes, I know, I get drawn towards pretty or interesting artwork. The question is always; Is the music as good as the cover? Fortunately Kevel from Greece has some hardhitting stuff in their single from their upcoming second album, Mutatis Mutandis. A good blend of multiple sub-genres, notably black and sludge gives the beginning song "Of Being" lots of character, with disharmonious tones, barking vocals and a deep bass and drums laying a solid foundation.
Mutatis Mutandis will be released by Italian label I, Voidhanger records on the 23rd of October, and I am eagerly waiting to hear if the rest of the album is as good as the single.

Listened to this week:

Korgonthurus - Kuolleestasyntynyt

Even though this album has been out for since March, and have on occasion seen plays, I've only really given it a good listen now. I'm vaguely familiar with Korgonthurus's first album Marras, and while the band has stood in the shadows of more well known Finnish black metal bands, Kuolleestasyntynyt is easily as good as any output from Sargeist, Horna or Behexen. It won't make my top 10 for this year, but it will make for a good listen for around 40 minutes.

0 - Entity

In last month's Under/Current, I might just have forgotten about 0's ("Null") first album in 6 years, Entity, which I will remedy now. This band with members from a broad spectrum of Icelandic bands (Including the ever present D.G. from Misþyrming as well as Skáphe above) leans more to the doomy and depressive side of metal, with anguished and cleaner vocals. Besides the very noteworthy vocals, the guitar-tone is absolutely great and the drums are mixed to really enhance the slow, foreboding and brooding atmosphere, which this album has in spades. Also, while the album is available for free at their bandcamp to not discourage the poorer listener, we encourage you to get this album and leave a donation for the band.

Godflesh - Streetcleaner

This album was first full length album from Godflesh, released on Earache records 13th November 1989. The band had previously released an EP that i also highly recommend the band is formed by Justin Broadrick on vocal and guitar and G.C. Green on bass and the album is a true benchmark for what would become the industrial/experimental scene for heavy music. The album starts off with the bands big hit if you want to call it that, Like Rats, and it is a heavy song with a bit of English go f… yourself-attitude in the lyrics, a trend goes for the whole album. Combined with electronic beats, the underlying heavy distortions of the guitars and the overall feeling, this album is my favorite by these British.

Spirit Adrift - Enlightened in Eternity

Alright, traditional metal time this month. I am very much looking forward to the new release from Arizona rockers Spirit Adrift, a side project of Nate Garrett, who all so plays in the death metal band Gatecreeper. The two first releases from the band have been very much in the stoner genre, all of them good, like a mix of stoner rock from the 70s combined with classic NWOBHM-riffs. For this new album it so far sounds like they have said goodbye to the stoner aspect of their previously releases  and went all-in on the NWOBHM sound, with a cool sound like a classic metal album. Look for a review from us here at metal to go...

Listened to this week:

Pig Destroyer - Prowler in the Yard

Well, it's time to destroy and how better to do that than with one of the most innovative band in grindcore genre? Pig Destroyer was formed in 1997 in Alexandria, Virginia and they have been grinding ever since. They incorporated thrash, doom, punk and everything in between into their version of grindcore, making them stand out in a genre full of bands that to the untrained ear can sound a bit same-ish. Prowler in the Yard is a perfect example of their sound, I would highly recommend that you also check out the two EPs Mass and Volume and Natasha it truly shows how versatile this band really is and why they are one of my favorite bands right now...

Forn Kaldr - Mystic Arcane Lands (EP)

Two years ago, I had the pleasure of finding this one-man project from the UK hiding in the corners of Bandcamp. At that time he released his self-titled debut EP that stood out to me compared to other projects within the atmospheric black metal scenery. There is a peace of mind to it that is hard to find elsewhere when we put the words black metal to it. This project is instrumental, and not hearing vocals in every band you listen to is kind of relieving in my opinion. Compared to his first EP, this one has taken a huge step forward production wise as it sounds more self-played than listening to some computer designed instruments.

Favourite track: On Ancient Winds

Currently looking forward to:

Leviathan (Swe) - Förmörkelse

18 years have passed since the 2002 debut “Far Beyond The Light”, which was only discovered by myself around eight years ago. As it blew me away, it was also kind of different in its instrumental layers, maybe Norwegian black metal inspired at times. This new release has a different pace to its entire existing which brings out that Swedish technique to its sound mixed with full soundscape tracks that suits this decade well, but will I be missing the old stuff in this new treasure, time will tell..

Horncrowned - Rex Exterminii (The Hand of the Opposer)

Since their debut in 2003 the Colombian group has offered as much as five full-length releases that each time has been totally underestimated. Further into November this year they will release this extremely powerful crushing black metal record (Teaser here!) that hopefully will open more people's ears to these massive attacking riffs and raw in-your-face vocals that, combined, gives a medium rare production, just what makes this type of black metal sounds best.

Listened to this week:

ColdWorld - The Stars Are Dead Now

As for one of my most ever listened to projects, this debut of his records was re-released earlier this month on Bandcamp with a new design done by House of Inkantation. A lot has happened when we look at each release by this man but none will come close to how finding and listening to it for the first time felt. I knew this type of sound, some would call it depressive, I personally hear it as the opposite as it gives me joy. If you are into experimental metal this is recommended.

Favourite track: Suicide

Lamentari - Missa Pro Defunctis (EP)

Back in March, these Danish guys released their debut out of total darkness. It passed straight through me and I only got to discover it weeks ago when they took the stage at Raise Your Horns festival at Bornholm, Denmark. It was the first time they had a physical audience and they delivered the EP to perfection. This week I gave my physical bought edition a spin and I would say this band would have to make a live show CD/DVD to really give the detail its fullest. The symphonic parts combined with the amazing drum-play just do not get to unfold itself properly to where it could be.

Favourite track: Confutatis
